Pennsylvania Community Experiences Spike in Water Nitrate Levels

Pennsylvania families are becoming increasingly concerned about the safety of their tap water and the risks it poses for infants.

Nitrates found in drinking water can make babies very sick; infants under six months of age are at particular risk for nitrate poisoning when they ingest formula that has been prepared with contaminated tap water. Nitrate poisoning includes symptoms like shortness of breath and blue baby syndrome. The EPA set the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for nitrates in water at 10 ppm; water tested in Adams County, Pennsylvania, contained levels anywhere between 20-80 ppm.

When it comes to determining the cause behind the spike in nitrate levels in well water, some suspect it could be from a recent chemical plant fire in the area that contaminated local creeks. Though this is possible, the chemical plant fire has not been confirmed as the cause of the contamination.

Families in these communities have switched to bottled water for preparing formula, as well as other uses for their families. However, bottled water may not be the safest solution. Bottled water company, Niagara Bottling, recently issued a recall of bottled water from two of its Pennsylvania bottling plants after the supplier failed to report positive E. coli findings at the spring source. The Economics of Water Shortages

When there are water shortages, conservation means seeing lawns dry out and plants die.

But there’s another side this problem as many residents of California are discovering. There are fixed costs in operating a water treatment plant. In normal times this cost is offset by revenues from consumer fees based on water usage. The problem comes up when consumers use less water and the revenue paid to the water treatment plants drops as you would expect. Therein lies the rub – to provide service the water treatment plants must be able to cover their costs, so when the revenue drops what is the most likely course of action? To increase the rates charged for the lower quantity of water used.

This is very true in California today. After Governor Brown ordered communities to cut back their water usage, the water treatment agencies are finding themselves facing significant operating deficits. The AP reported recently that the City of Santa Barbara projected an operating loss of $5 million based on residents cutting water usage by 20%. If that wasn’t a hard enough pill to swallow, the residents of Santa Barbara are cutting back even further. In May they cut back 37% from normal usage. That’s leaving the utility in a real jam and water bills have been rising to make up the difference.

This is a good lesson in economic reality. The books must balance otherwise we might find ourselves in a situation like Greece.

By the way, if you purify your water with a distiller, you are not wasting water in good times or bad.

Be Prepared

When I was a young boy I was a member of the Boy Scouts. This is a wonderful organization which taught young boys so many basic skills. The Boy Scouts had a motto: “Be Prepared”.

These two words have so much meaning across life when you think about it. Apply these to your life and instill them in your children. Youngsters who read early are clearly better prepared for the challenges ahead. Youths who practice hard are generally better prepared to excel in sports. And likewise, preparation for the job you choose puts you in a better position to advance in your career.

Being prepared is also good when it comes to your family’s health. Drinking distilled water is a good preparation for a healthier life, as you remove the toxins, even those at very low levels, which your body would otherwise have to deal with. This has even more importance today.

I’m sure you have seen the daily reports of weather extremes. We are seeing record droughts in California. At the same time there have been unprecedented rains and flooding in Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere in the US. This is not impacting the US alone. North and South Korea are in drought conditions, and New Zealand and Eastern Europe are having record rainfall and flooding. These extremes can have a profound effect on water quality. Water treatment plants in some areas can’t handle the volume of water effectively, while in drought areas water quality can be severely compromised.

Those families who are prepared have installed water distillers. A well-designed distiller can remove virtually all toxins from the water regardless of the water conditions. At the same time distillers are friendly to the environment – they simply don’t waste water.

So my advice is to tell your friends and neighbors about your distiller and the wonderful benefits of “being prepared” in the water you consume. You will be doing them a great service.

Beware: Your Airline Water May Be Contaminated
An article just published by Telegraph Travel from the UK highlights the water purity issues on board aircraft.

Ranked the fourth cleanest airline in world, behind three other Asian carriers, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airlines has a water purity problem. The Hong Kong Port Health Office which audits water purity on aircraft, collected samples from 22 planes and found that 14 of the samples tested failed to meet minimum hygiene standards.

If you are a traveler, you have likely asked for water on board the aircraft. Usually you are given a sealed bottle of a commercial brand of water. However, if you were poured water from a jug, or if you asked for tea or coffee, you are getting water from the bulk water tanks built into the aircraft. These tanks are filled by commercial water companies at virtually all airports around the world. In Cathay Pacific’s case they provided passengers with bottled water but cautioned passengers not to drink the water or brush their teeth with the water coming from the faucets in the bathrooms on board as this water comes from the on-board bulk water storage tanks.

This is not a new phenomenon. In 2002 the Wall Street Journal studied water taken on 14 different flights. Their study found considerable problems with water quality including Salmonella, Staphylococcus and tiny insect eggs. Furthermore the WSJ reported that as a rule, bacteria levels were much higher than US government limits. Later studies by the EPA and NBC also showed an ongoing problem with water quality on-board aircraft.

Unfortunately the planes of today have not yet advanced to the point they have a steam distiller on-board. That would solve their problems. Meanwhile, be prepared and only drink the bottled water they provide – distilled if you are lucky.

Water recalled after possible E.coli contamination

A bottling company has announced a voluntary recall of several brands of bottled water after E.coli was found in one of its source springs.

On June 10th, Far Away Springs in Auburn, Pennsylvania, which provides water to Niagara, discovered contaminants, namely E Coli, in their water source. They failed to notify their partners about this contamination in a timely manner, and now Niagara is recalling thousands of their bottled water products “out of an abundance of caution” for the safety of consumers. The company stressed that no contamination has been found in its product or at its plants.

Niagara Bottling is voluntary recalling water bottled in its Pennsylvania plants between June 10 and June 18, 2015 and sold under these brands:

7-Eleven
Acadia
Acme
Big Y
Best Yet
Morning Fresh
Niagara
Nature’s Place
PriceRite
Shaw’s
ShopRite
Superchill
Western Beef Blue
Wegman’s
The affected products have codes that begin with the letter F or A. The first digit after the letter indicates the number of the production line. The next two numbers indicate the day, then the month in letters, the year and then the time, based on a 24-hour clock.

Example: A610JUN15 2000

According the Niagara’s official public notice, bottled water with these codes should be boiled for at least one minute and then cooled before it is consumed.

Again and again we’re seeing that the only way to be completely certain about what is in the water you and your family drink, is to take matters into your own hands. With a premium water distiller in your home you can rest assured your drinking water is safe.

Summer Brings Threat of Toxic Blue-Green Algae

Each year one is likely to read of the “Toxic Blue Green Algae” that appear in many of our lakes. Last summer, Lake Erie hit the headlines and the 400,000 residents of Toledo could not use their tap water at all for three days.

With summer now upon us, the publicity is sure to rise again, and not just around Lake Erie. Most states have this algae problem, as I have pointed out in an earlier blog.

To one who is educated in biology, there is not one problem here but rather two. While green algae blooms occur frequently, there is another culprit which is often referred to as “blue-green algae” when technically it is not. The culprit is in fact bacteria with the name “cyanobacteria”. Cyanobacteria are also green and the toxins produced by the cyanobacteria are what the authorities in Toledo last summer were concerned about. The cyanobacteria and algae get grouped together by news reporters because both are blue-green in color.

But cyanobacteria are a serious concern.

“Cyanobacteria can produce neurotoxins, cytotoxins, endotoxins, and hepatotoxins (i.e. the microcystin producing bacteria species microcystis), and are called cyanotoxins” ……..Wikipedia. The cyanobacteria were the reason the authorities cautioned residents against “boiling the water” before drinking it. Boiling, in fact, concentrates the cyanotoxins in the water being boiled while the steam produced is actually free of toxins.

We had the science department of the University of Nebraska test this water last year after it had been put through a Pure Water distiller, and as we expected, “distillation effectively lowered the concentration of the three cyanotoxins below instrument detection limits.”

It is for this reason that those consumers in Toledo who had a well-designed water distiller, could keep on drinking the water from Lake Erie when other residents could not.

Water: The Athletic Edge

Water may be one of the best-kept secrets of elite athletes.

Athletes, whether all-pro or all-city league, are always looking for a competitive advantage. Some try supplements and extreme forms of training. Others are always in search of the latest greatest equipment. Many overlook how water impacts performance on the field.

In his book Pure Water for Better Living, Eldon C. Muehling notes that we’ve known about the link between hydration and athletic performance for decades. Muehling describes a fascinating experiment conducted in the 1940s at the Harvard University School of Public Health. Dr. G.C. Pitts studied how hydration effects athletes exercising in a hot environment. In the first experiment the athletes drank no water during their training. After three and one-half hours of walking a treadmill with regular rest periods, their body temperatures rose to 102° F, a temperature at which physiological functions are impaired and collapse is inevitable.

In the second test, the same athletes were allowed to drink as much water as they wanted. Their body temperatures rose more slowly. It took six hours—nearly twice as long—for their body temperatures to reach 102° F, and for them to experience what is known as the zone of exhaustion.

In round three, the athletes were required to drink as much water as they were losing in sweat. After seven hours of exercising, their body temperatures never even reached 101° F and the athletes said they felt they could exercise indefinitely.

Dr. Pitts concluded that when the athletes drank all the water they wanted they were actually drinking one-third less water than they lost in sweat. Thirst is not a reliable indicator of how much water athletes should drink.

Sports nutritionists and doctors have confirmed Pitts’ findings. Dr. Michael Colgan of the Colgan Institute sites a study that shows a muscle dehydrated even three percent loses about ten percent of its contractile strength and eight percent of its reaction speed. A study at Ball State University tracked trained runners who were dehydrated by two to three percent. Their times dropped seven percent.

When you’re training, especially in hot conditions, drink up! Drink more than you think you need. Water will allow you to keep performing and give you a competitive edge over those who don’t know Dr. Pitts’ secret: H2O.

E-Coli in a School in Maine

Elevated levels of bacteria were found in Marshwood Middle School in Maine. Steady stream of students are grabbing bottled water to drink for at least the coming 3 weeks. It is believed that a valve that was not properly closed in the pipe that may have caused the water contamination. Here’s a report from WMTW-TV:

Water contamination is increasingly becoming the center of attention by many news reporters. It is believed that more than 30 million residents in the United States do not have access to safe drinking water. This is an alarming and troubling number in our nation.

The simple truth we cannot avoid is this; we need to be proactive not reactive to such situations when they occur. If schools and hospitals install an emergency water distillation systems for such like conditions, there won’t be a need to be worried.

Under boil alert, FEMA and the American Red Cross recommend distillation as the ultimate solution for water pollution. No filters can stand that type of water contamination!

US Embassies across the globe use distillation for their employees and staff. They realize in case of a biological attack, a water distiller is the arsenal that will eliminate bacteria present in water, thus producing clean, safe, fresh, pure and secure water.

Water Quality in a Drought

The Great California Drought: It’s been all over the news lately that California is getting into more and more trouble with the continuing drought and dwindling water supply. Not enough people are conserving it, crops need it and enforcing conservation is extremely difficult. While everyone is concerned about the amount of water being used, few people think about the quality of water being used.
During a drought, water levels are low because much of the water has been evaporated and not replenished. The water that is available will be more concentrated with contaminants. During these times, we can expect to see an increase in nitrates, organic and inorganic minerals, bacteria, pesticides and herbicides in the remaining water supply.
water treatment picIn addition, California’s municipal water treatment facilities will be pressed to treat and recycle the remaining available drinking water supply at a faster rate, which will adversely affect the quality of water. Many municipal water supplies will add additional chlorinate to the water to kill bacteria. This means it is very likely that Californians will be getting more chlorine in tap water then they are accustomed to.
What does this mean for the water conscious home consumer? Bottled water is an option. However, the consumer should be made aware that bottled water, if treated or filtered at all, is often of variable quality and will likely be of lesser quality in a drought when the available water inputs are of lesser quality. In addition, the process of bottling and filtering water is extremely wasteful for our resources and the environment. Finally, the cost of bottled water can quickly add up.
dirty-filtersThere are several options available for environmentally and cost conscious consumers. Home treatment systems known as ‘point of use’ POU systems for drinking water purification are a common option. These include barrier treatment methods such as ‘RO’ reverse osmosis, filtration and distillation. As with bottled water, RO systems are very inefficient and waste water. Also, with the increase in contamination, filters are not only going to deteriorate faster and need to be replaced more often, but their initial effectiveness will be lower. This can become especially expensive for RO systems which require regular replacement filters.
A sensible alternative are distillation POU systems. Distillation systems offer a high quality, eco-friendly and cost-conscious option. A quality U.S. made distiller will consistently remove 99.9+% of water contaminants without wasting a lot of water. Bacteria is killed in the boiling process and practically all of the contaminants are removed when the water becomes vapor and then re-condenses, leaving fresh, pure water for you and your family to drink.

Action is needed to preserve our precious water resources. We cannot rely on cheap inexpensive technologies that waste tons of water to purify gallons of water. Distillation technology is the ONLY water treatment that should be used especially in times of water distress like that in California. Distillation wastes a fraction of a fraction of water to produce safe fresh pure and secure water.
